I recently replaced my DVD drives with Plextors (PX-712A) also - Tried burning some CD's on them - Fine performance.

I still use the CD drive for CD's 90% of the time, but if you get a good burn and a low error rate, it really doesn't make a difference. I just don't want to "burn out" the more expensive DVD drive on CD's.

My new (Sonica-X) DAW came with a Phillips DVD burner... So far, I've left it in the machine (and added a Plextor Plexwriter, of course!) but I haven't had a chance to do a "head-to-head" with it yet...
