It'd be better still to not have a back at all...or am I misunderstanding? Even if you built the panels with the 2" or 4" air gap in the frame you wouldn't need a back...it wouldn't hurt you in that case, but it's not necessary. If you didn't build them with an air gap and you're planning to stand them off the walls 2" or 4", then don't build a back.
