Different strokes i suppose.

I also liked the JBL nearfields and the Event's. I bought the Event's (20/20 bass) at the time, i thought as a stop gap until i could afford something better, then i fell in love with them. The first two albums i mixed on them, i went to the mastering sessions up at Sterling just to see how much my speakers were lying to me and was very pleasantly surprised to hear how well my mixes translated and how much it sounded like my mix. after that i kept them. Now i mix with SP8's and still have my 20/20's.

you know, in the end, it all comes down to learning your speakers and what they are and are not telling you, and referncing on multiple sets of speaker. If you are a mixer and only mixing on one pair of speakers, you are not a mixer.

quite true.. you really gotta get to know your speakers. I think the old v8's were popular for hip hop because of the tight low end they give. No guessing there, imo that was the best thing about those speakers. The uppermids was harder to mix on and caused ear fatigue.

The SP8's in my opinion are great listening speakers.. The thing is it sounds too good, and makes everything shiny. I dont think I want that in a speaker.

I think the OP will do fine with a some used v8's along with his hs50's. Try considering the bm5a or 6a. Those are real contenders if you are even considering the a7.
