good question.
I did a recording long time ago of a small ensemble when I got my AKG C4000B's. I recorded both in ORTF (card, 110/17 cm) and in AB (omni, 40 cm).
Did not like the ORTF result at all, weird image and sound.
I thought: Ok, off axis + low budget large membrane is not good for ORTF - but maybe I did something wrong - I dunno.
It should work in theory...
