| hmmm... maybe it is not dither.... but something else coinciding... just a guess....
what about intersample clipping.... funny things can happen at nice fractional units of the nyquist frequency; guitar stuff being into 5kHz+ which is near 1/8 Nyquist (and approximately 1/4 of the audio band)...
Have you tried reducing the digital output -3 dB to the DAC (however, your setup is) and making up the gain in analog on the monitors as a potential test?
