I don't think you will be happy with anything in that price range. I have a set of Mackie HR824's and I wanted the same thing. I checked subs up to around $500 and none of them could compete with the 824's. It actually made them sound worse. On top of that the Mackie sub is a fortune, but the only one that has enough juice to give me that night club low end.
I'm looking into small PA set ups now. If accuracy is important then this is not the route to go, but if you want to hear how things translate loud, it can be beneficial. Still ... at $600 I don't think you will be happy with anything you find new or used.
