Modern rock mixing - no transients

Hi guys,
just benn listening to "Over you" by Daughtry. Letīs not discuss the music here, but the sound.

What struck me most ist that the elements in the mix have NO bright transients left except for the attack of the bassdrum. Even the snare has no bright attack left. Itīs a certain style of mixing taken to the extreme. Very bold and in your face, though quite unnatural. Some will hate the sound, some will love it. The question is, how did the mixer achieve this, and, how much is the mastering (if at all) responsible for the absence of transients.

The mastering is over the top too, at least 3dB hotter than what I would ever consider "still ok". But I doubt the mastering crunch is the reason, because if there were transients left in the mix, crunching the 2buss would bring them out even more/brighter. I guess it was done in the mix either by using compressors on everything with extremely short attack times. Or the guy has been using transient designers or such plugins on everything to get rid of īem.

I would LOVE to hear the song unmastered.

Is there anyone here who knows somebody involved in the making/mixing/mastering of this record?

Rock on!
Pat

ps - I also think it is necessary to remove transients this much in the mix in order to do the mastering this hot...
