As a purist myself, and I was actually there during the Bowie period, This has nothing to do with "mechanized triggers" and everything to do with songs. Neither Bowie, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Sting have made a great record in the last 15 years.
Finding great songs today that do not sound recycled is a rarity at best.

agree, they're a solid band. impressive live. but this sort of production just reminds me of the aural equivalent to a way over-photoshopped maxim shoot - does nothing for me. barely looks/sounds real by the end. but people still buy maxim, and people definitely dig this style (for now). it just comes off to me like 'we have the technology; let's use it!!! more more more YEAHHH!!' IMO IMO IMO.
to qualify that, a few recent modern recordings i've loved were 'in rainbows', 'year zero', and 'zeitgeist'. again, it's all just opinion and i respect what you've done. you're quite good, just not my style.
