Because RMS is available, and because it's an accurate energy measure when measuring pink noise it's a better substitute for a VU meter than a peak meter. Otherwise RMS is useless!!!!!!
If you haven't heard, the K-system is expandable to other loudness measures, including the latest IEC measure. It will happen, when someone wishes to bother coding it. Over 15 manufacturers so far have embraced the K-System, all they have to do is convert over to the IEC loudness standard and retain the scale.
I firmly believe that having a "ZERO reference" for the loudness is far more ergonomic for engineers, including relevant change of colors when you are "under" or "over". Far more useful than a negative number (or a positive number) for that matter. The TC meter has a variable scale option and the relative scale permits use of a "ZERO" reference point (like the K-system). This makes a lot more sense than the current Orban scale with "zero at the top" or any loudness scale measured in "phons" or "absolute loudness in dB scale".
