Stock the VLA is really fat and slow and the SM7 is already a bit that way. I would retube the thing for SM7 vocals...JAN Philips 12AT7. Unplug it before retubing.
Settings depend on your taste. I would probably put the knobs at noon and the buttons all out and crank the preamp until you get ~6db of compression on vocals.
