I'm someone who appreciates transparency I think more than a lot of others- I'm not always reaching for the transformiest, tubiest signal path- sometimes I have a great player, instrument, room & mic & I just want the preamp to pass that along. Other times I do want some color.
To me the Mint Julep was in in the same field sound wise as the Buzz Elixer & Mono Gama on "discrete" ( transformerless OP). All nicely transparent & open sounding, although each a little different- but all 3 were really good.
