I usually play the MIDI keyboard. I also have a Roland SPD-20, which is a sample-based drum instrument with 8 pads that can be played with sticks or hands. I rarely use it for some odd reason. Speaking of Reason I also will use the Redrum pattern sequencer in that program for electronic stuff that is perfectly quantized. In Cubase I will usually apply an iterative quantize on any drum parts I play manually on the keyboard, from between 20% and 67% depending on the performance. This tightens up the feel without making it seem mechanical... at least that's the theory.
The difficult part for me is the high hat and trying to achieve a reasonable result from samples that resembles a real drummer opening and closing the hat... it's a mystery to me.
