I find Soundreplacer extremely useful and it saves me a lot of time.
Be careful to go in to the replaced track and line up the transients with the original. Soundreplacer is usually a little off the mark.
Multing a track usually refers to duplicating a track applying treatment to it and bringing it up under the original.
So you might be after some attack on a snare.........you duplicate the snare track and just work on the attack of it either with eq or comp or both. You could actually eq out any other part of the sound ie the body of the snare. Then you take this attack sound and bring it up in volume under the real snare. It's very different from just working with the original sound.
There are many uses for this technique but watch out for phase issues. You don't want any part of the mult to be the same as the original track or you will destroy the sound.
There is an engineer on this list called e-cue who has posted some in depth descriptions of this technique. Do a search on him or multing.
Good luck!
