I think their are 3 types of client:

1. Those that know nothing and just accept and like what you do. I can work with them

2. Those that know their shit and have a big input to the mix. I can work with them.

3. Those that just want to make some changes so they have some control. I struggle with these.

I always mix by myself and then go through it with them later, for the number 3 client (during tracking I will have sussed out which they are) I sometimes leave a couple of things unfinished in the mix. eg I mix the song completely but don't touch the backup vox or one guitar part will be too loud.

They come in and pick these things up and you do what you would have done anyway and everyone is happy.

I have never done the fake fader move etc but I have seen it.
now THAT'S a good idea.
