Yes, opamps. In the interview he mentions that he used opamps to characterize signal procesing. He calls them analogs to real world components.
In his new version of the 8900 compressor he will use DSP chips in the same way. And as mentioned also in the sidechain at 192K for more accuracy.
I must say it's a very cool interview wich you may have to re-read to fully understand it. George Massenburg is a guy that knows what he is doing.
