Thought I'd bump this as I'm in a very similar boat to the OP... I heard that east west GOLD is incredible for the money and although has slightly inferior sounding solo instruments to VSL, it's recorded WET and works great straight out the box... (NB: THIS IS NOT FROM EXPERIENCE, IT'S JUST WHAT I'VE READ)

As far as FW800 / eSata external drives go, I thought it's extremely common for them to be on external drives - I'm pretty sure I've seen a sample library for sale which comes with an external drive (with the library pre-installed, duh)...
