No, it is a technique. I hit really hard at times and don't break cymbals anymore (haven't in about 7 years or so) . You just have to know the cymbal's threshold and stay just below that. Past the threshold you aren't getting volume anyway. I used to break them though.

Thick cymbals last longer, hence rock cymbals being so thick and awful sounding. But, sometimes you get unlucky and a cymbal can have a weak spot where it is predestined to break.
