the U195 has a "Fat" switch that sounds a lot like added proximity effect- so maybe that's why some people are saying that. Near, far, Fat switch in or out, its just more options - you still have to try it out and listen.
yesterday, I used mine on a vocal track with the Fat switch off and the singer in really close and it sounded great.
