I would say that depends on the vocals (and, no, I have never used a u195, but I don't think it matters). Are they intimately whispered? You could get away with being a couple inches away. Are they shouted? Place them a foot or more away. I don't think the fact that it's a u195 as opposed to a BLUE Dragonfly, for example, matters much.
