What works far better than any type of gobo is using a Figure-8 pattern and aiming the null at the closest other instrument(s), or the funkiest or noisiest part of the room. The Figure 8 pattern has a much larger and usable null than cardioid, creating more separation with less frequency response weirdness. And the reason you never hear about this is simply that most folks have never tried it, possibly never even owned a figure-8 mic.

And to answer your next question, pick up a used Rode NT2000 or NT2-A, you can find them under $300 sometimes, or an AT4050 for a little more.
