In general I think the Vintech is a better unit as the eq is good and the unit is way more versatile. My favourite right now is API.

Nick,
So I wonder if the Vintech 1272 might be somewhere in between? It's supposed to be based on a Neve 1272, FWIW. It doesn't have the EQ options of the X73, though. Why do you think the X73 wouldn't pair up well with the NT2000? That mic actually seems to have a fairly dark, smooth high end, and as I remember, seemed pretty similar in sound to a C414 I put it up against recently.
I am a little worried to go with something that can be described as "wooly", since that sounds similar to what I have now, and I would hate to just be trading one dull sound for another. And I would also be hesitant to go the aggressive route, since a couple of my other mics would probably rip your head off if run through something like that, since the high end on them already tends to be pretty edgy. Anybody have any suggestions for something that might be somewhere in between?
Eh....choices, choices.
Thanks for the response, Nick.
