i'm glad that akai's still in the game, but i can't get too excited by an 8-track hard disk recorder with a built in virtual analog.

not to say great stuff can't be made on it. it just seems that this 5000 misses the point. either make a box that really competes with computer-based daws (perhaps sacrificing the flexibility of third-party plugins for the stability of hardware) or put out something simple and fun with a cool sound and a creativity-inspiring workflow (like the early mpcs).

seems this one stacks up favorably to cubase 4 on a powermac g3, but it'll have to cost more than the $2k they're charging for the mpc2500. ah well...meanwhile, roger linn and dave smith are putting out the sweet-looking linndrum ii analog for $1500 street (i think).
