I can't answer your mix bus question because I haven't used any of those.
For the plug in question, I understand what you're asking, but I think you really have to know what the various makes and types of plug-ins sound like, and then the choice is up to you.
That said, download as many demos as you can and listen to how they work and sound with the type of music you record. Then pick your faves.
I can tell you my faves, but it doesn't mean I recommend them to everyone. They just work for me. That said, they are:
- Waves RenEq/RenComp, Supertap, Q10, C1, L1, L2 (the C4 demo I liked on non-wall-of-sound, rhythmic, dist guitars), RenVox and RenBass are extremely useful too
- TC MasterX (for edgy drums), MegaReverb, and Chorus
Everything else for me is outboard or happens before I ever start mixing.
