Another part of what you're hearing may be the fact that they lowered the key to accommodate his voice and he's not stretching as hard. That can make a huge difference in the perception of "passion" in a singing performance.

If you can't bring back the music to the level it deserves, why bother? Of course I only heard the one clip, and I wasn't there. But I have the old Led Zeppelin concert video and aside from Bonham's drumming, it is Robert Plant's singing that truly blows me away. And I wasn't there, either.
