I'm sorry Nathan but if you give people advice ... try to keep it serious. I hope I read this post wrong because the way it comes down on me is that you're actually saying not to expect a mix to sound good if you mix on genelecs ..... puleeez ....
Ever heard of different strokes for different folks. I have no problem with you hyping the AML1's ... I've had them at the studio for quite a while and was able to work on them quite a bit. Have you ? I wonder.
It is a good speaker ... a very good speaker ... hell they sound amazing when you put a finished CD on. But that is NO reference whatsoever for it being a good studio monitor. A good studio monitor is something you create mixes on .... something you work on day in day out .... something you can rely on. I'm not saying that the AML1 cannot be that kind of speaker because I'm sure that for a lot of people it can be. But I'm pretty damn sure that for a lot of people They are quite the oposite. NS10 ring a bell ? Why are there so many great mixes produced on those you think. Because you have to MAKE them sound good. I would almost say you have to fight them to make it sound good. But take your mix outside when it sounds good on the NS10 and you can be damn sure it will sound good anywhere ... THAT's why people use them to mix on. For the record ... I hate NS10's ... but that aside ... my point is that in my particular case ... the AML was quite the oposite of what you're saying. For me the speaker was just too easy .... almost everything sounds good on them ... and again quite the oposite of what you say ... it only sounds good on them.
Again ... not saying the AML1 is a bad speaker ... hell no ... quite the contrary ... but I do have a problem with someone who says that other speakers are not able to produce great sounding mixes.
One last thing ... it is a small speaker and like ALL small speakers the bass response is limited. The AML1 might stand out within small speakers when it comes down to bass response but it is definately not the holy grail of bass truth either. just like any other small speaker you can only do so much with them down there ... after that it's just a guess. Main speakers do get used for other things then impressing A&R people and clients you know.
Oh, and people, please DO NOT ... I repeat ... NEVER EVER buy a speker for your studio just by what you hear on a stand on a trade show. That is NO reference whatsoever ... not for any gear and definately not for a speaker. The only right way to choose a speaker is by working on them and creating mixes on them. If what you mix on them translates to what you hear on other systems and in other environments then you have found a good speaker to work on ... for you that is.
