I was considering getting a Mac Book for this same task (remote recording, with an HDR backup), but I got a really good deal on a Dell XPS M1330 (I got 20% discount thanx to the Christmas promo campaign), and it seems that for less the price it's specs are those of a MBP (2.2 GHz Core 2 DUO CPU, 2Gb 667 Ram, 160Gb S-ATA drive, 2 USB 2.0, Firewire, DVD R/W etc...). It's also reviewed as very quiet...I'll let you know as soon as I have it in my hands (can't wait).
Also, a lot depends on what DAW you are recording to.
