Agreed, and I think this is why many people buy into the various hi-res BS claims. When I used to record professionally there would be groups that sounded great immediately, and groups that sounded lame no matter what I did. One of my favorite memories is of a big band session - they played their butts off and sounded amazing in the studio and in the control room.

So Joe Blow buys a new outboard word clock or whatever and the next group he records happens to come out great. Joe concludes the word clock improved the sound.
