but I'm afraid for radio it will not work.

2 hints:

there is a psychoacoustic trick. you can highpass very strictly, but with boosting the correct harmonics, the ear will supply for the basic. a tube simulator that adds more harmonics, could help also, and if still something is missing, try a EQ'd gated reverb on this. keep the attack soft and "african".

for the issue that it were too empty, I think it is the handclap sound. 2 tricks: if you have the parameter, you can add a slight ADSR to the pitch of the clap, so that it begins to speak, like "plow!". (its a milliseconds time setting)
for certain parts (e,g, what is meant as chorus) you could hide a small timbales sound behind the clap, and give it a similar adsr.
this may sound very sexy.
it can benefit from a very short, but delayed reverb (shorter than now).
the clap can be very mid-range and bold.
