OK. So I've got yet another song doing this and I've just gone through the process described above and even that's not enough for this one. The one way I seem to be able to get things working is to flatten and then get all comp'd tracks out of the arrange page entirely. I have to delete them as muting and hiding is not good enough to stop the crashes. One all comp'd takes are flattened and gotten out of the arrangement I can once again track.
This sucks.
Edited to add that I was able to get things working by dropping all muted (track and actual comps muted) parts into a folder and then hiding everything. I could probably parse out a more exact sequence of events, but I'm just excited I can actually record vocals now. Let's here it for being able to capture that inspiration while the iron's hot
