It is actually better to leave the preamps nearer to the drum kit. Mic level signals are much "smaller" than line level, and thus more prone to signal loss and other gremlins.

As far as setting levels, all the preamps you've mentioned have built-in metering. As long as you're A/D is correctly calibrated, you can trust the meters on your preamps.

BTW, in both the case of the Great River and the APIs, you'll probably wanna run them pretty hot to get some transformer-y goodness (harmonic distortion), so cal your A/D to allow for pretty big signals on the input.
