FIRST...You gotta understand layering. My best "808" sounding drums have come from a higher octave pitched kick layered with the original deep kick. Search the forums for more info...

SECOND...You gotta understand that people usually tune their 808 samples to the key of the song. This makes the entire thing bang better. Search the forums here for more info...

THIRD...You gotta understand that the sound you hear on the finished record is MIXED AND MASTERED.

They probably are starting out with the same old 808 samples that you, me, and everyone else has. They've just been mixed and mastered in a proper way that makes em bang.

LAST...If you just have really shitty 808 samples to begin with, check out that GoldBaby tape808 pack he's advertising around here. They are pretty decent. Although I'm still rollin with my DANCE MEGA DRUMS sample cd.

The 808 I've made that bangs the MOST was actually a patch from FL Studio's "DrumSynth Live", layered with a punchy 909 kick I had sitting around. Check my myspace for the track "hella tight".

[EDIT]

ONE MORE THING...Hella people starting out don't do this, but its such a ****ing simple thing...Make sure for the really long, booming 808s that you set them to cut each other. Usually this is called "cut" or "mute group" depending on what sampler you're using.

Basically how that works is if 1 of your 808's is sounding, and the other hit comes on, it'll cut off the 1st - making sure it bangs and doesn't muddy up the sonic space.
good stuff!

i feel no matter how much you layer you still wont get the nitti 808 he is referring to. that is tape / saturation. i agree about the high pitching the 808 with the original..its the easiest way to add depth/punch and still not cloud the spectrum
