I've heard a couple of listening examples of both pres and I've read quite a bit about the BA and a some about the DAV. They are two different kinds of pres. The DAV is quite clean & neutral sounding compared to the BA, which sounds more neve-ish but without any low end mud. From what I could tell the BA (1:4 + JLM99) sounded BIG.

I think you can run a line level signal into DI when using a pad, at least an unbalanced signal should be ok.
