Keep expenses at a minimum and don't sell yourself too cheap...you can always lower your rates but nobody's gonna accept if your rates suddenly go up.
Secure yourself so you are not 100% dependent on the studio to provide you with your full income - maybe you still need to do some freelancing but this can keep you from doing wedding events and local song contests
Make deals with clients you have worked with before...for example, here in Denmark almost every music video made here is produced by the same person!!!! He makes deals with all the major labels and gets paid a fixed price every year to produce all of the labels videos!
