Tuning/performance tinny speakers

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble keeping the balance between the emotion in a performance and keeping it in tune. I'm working with a female singer and she has a great voice, and I'm happy with the way the mixes sound. The performances have a lot of feeling. However when I take it to a smaller system tinny system like a laptop where the vocals are very exposed the tuning becomes more apparent.

What I'm doing to overcome this at the moment is to go through the mixes, and playing them through £20 AKG headphones loudly so I can put them on the desk and listen for the bits where the vocal is too out of tune, and either selecting a different take, manually tune the notes with envelope tuning or whacking some autotune on it.

I wondered if there was something more fundamentally wrong with the way I'm mixing though. Perhaps I'm relying on too much low mids when played through decent speakers? or maybe the vocals or too bright?

Any thoughts or tips anyone?

Mike
