Some systems have ALL shields connected on the patch and assuming the majority of sources / destinations are balanced then it may be the best way to go. You have to decide whether you want shields on outputs, inputs or both. In terms of preparation it is possibly easier to bus all the grounds and chop them out if you have a problem. With a balanced / unbalanced setup there is no 'best' way.
