I do agree with you, although there are different opinions about that. If you use it in moderation, it's actually pretty good.
As an example, Elliot Sheiner is a big fan of the "old" Nuendo EQ. Much of the Surround Stuff that he is producing in his home studio is done only with that EQ.
As a matter of fact, that's why we kept the preference "use N3 EQ as default". We do not want to disappoint the Steely Dan fans.
