As with most projects, dialogue is key. Especially for non-fiction documentary style programs. (National Geographic, Discovery, etc.) I would recommend adhering to their deliverables specs COMPLETELY. They have no qualms about sending a program back for one or two peaks over their spec.

When it comes down to it, there isn't that much of a difference between short and long form for TV. The producers usually want everything loud (even if it shouldn't be).

Get ready to hear a lot of whooshes.
