They are all the same. Mattasbob's right; it's probably length that's your issue. You can go a bit longer than 15 feet with good cable, but not much more without introducing errors.
You can get toslink repeaters that work well, and Hear Technologies makes a toslink to ethernet conversion that allows you to extend the run hundreds of feet, up to 500, if I recall.
