I would say the UAD-1 gets very near to the hardware I've heard (1176 and Roland Space Echo particularly).

Now, take that with a grain of salt, as I'm a composer/musician, not a proper mix engineer. However, I own a few hardware pieces and find myself around some of the real stuff with some frequency.

Mostly though, most of the UAD-1 emulations just sound really good. My favorites lately: The two listed above, Plate140, LA3A and both Neve EQ sims.
