I downloaded the demo version of Wavelab 5. It sounded markedly different than Adobe. Better, yes - more open, spacious, smoother, etc. So, I climbed into the nooks and crannies of Adobe and discovered that dither was TURNED OFF. Turning it on, setting sample size to .5 bits, triangular - new Adobe! Sounds identical to Wavelab. Downsampling and burning shows it does that sonically identical to Wavelab, too.
Problem solved!
