Acoustic panels

Hello people! I am building a rehearsal studio, and I'm trying to determine whether or not it would be more efficient to use the traditional 2x4 or 2x2 panels, or use 6" x 4' panels. I built the room from the ground up, and without analyzing it it's not bad... there's a little echo throughout and buildup in the corners, which will get of course get bass traps. I'm also not shooting for absolute perfect balance: this is primarily a rehearsal space that I will also record out of here and there, so I have a little tolerance. (I suppose I should expect tolerance if I'm doing it myself, I'm no acoustician!)

So, having read some threads here suggesting the two different patterns of wall panels, does anyone have a recommendation as to which works better for them, and in what situation? I would like to track drums mostly using the open space; I can isolate guitars and vox.

Thanks for your time!
