This is so true. Its crazy how much more a snare sounds like a snare when you monitor with the close mic and the overhead and then even add in the room mic. The close mic is just for the power, its the other mics that shape the sound. Another thing that I've learned (and I got a pretty good teacher) is that if the snare doesn't sound great in the room, its not going to sound great on tape. I've fooled myself at times into thinking that even though the snare didn't sound all that nice, that I'd be able to record it and eq it to sound better. Never works.
