| Something less tubby on snare....
I usually can get what I want with 2 to 4 mics but I am really trying to find something better than the 57 and sm7 I have been using for the snare mic. I love the sound of the snare in the room mic (usually a LDC about 1ft infront of the bass drum at top rim height), however I want that openess on the top when close mic'ing the snare. This may be impossible due to proximity effect but I would at least like to get closer. The problem is the closer I get with the 57 the more the drum sound is lost and the more tubby and muddy it gets. I have found that close micing with LDC mic gets me a little more openess on top but it also picks up alot more around the kit which doesn't help me with the blend. I have thought about abandoning the close mic and find a distance with a LDC mic and just use some gobos around the drums to lessen the reflections and room sound.
So any tricks or tips you got I am all ears....
Thanks!
