A mixer isn't needed. All a mixer going to do is sum everything to one channel. The engineer would want to have track by track control of the mix. I say you need a better soundcard to record more inputs with syncing using midi( or better yet word clock).

What do you plan on using as your sequencer? Sonar, Pro Tools, Cubase?
