After reading many threads saying that it's better to "roll your own" desktop pc than to buy an off the shelf HP or DELL, I'm thinking of doing it. I have a friend who's built many pc's over the years. He'll help me. So my next. concern is how to choose components. If some components are less compatible with each other than others, where do I go for informed, autoritative advice ?

Thinking of spending between 800-1100 bucks, probably for a dual core. All I really know is that I'd like to get a big case that will be more likely to accomodate future upgrades. But I'd prefer not to get bitten by an "oh shit". An excellent teacher recently said, "plan twice, execute once".
