Help Needed! Production Tips for Indie/Folk/Rock Tune

Hello,

So, here's the problem. I write these folk/indie/rock tunes (comparable to The Decemberists, Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, etc.) and I love them and can imagine the song in my head. But by the time the song gets through my production mill, it sounds like a generic pop rock tune and it's so uninspiring that my vocal performance suffers tremendously because I try to fight some medium between what I want to sing it as and how it would fit in the song's current form. I uploaded a track to an unadvertised MySpace that is a perfect example of this.

Track Link: www.myspace.com/theadmiralson ("A Soldier's Life")

Bottom line: Can anyone provide me with some production tips to help me take this song that currently sounds like a generic pop-rock tune and bring it back to my indie/folk/rock goal?
