I still don't see how the degree can hurt you. Of course having a degree doesn't mean your going to be a great engineer. I just think at the beginning stages of your career it could push you ahead of the pack. Plus, if the whole recording thing doesn't work out then as Henchman said, at least you have something to fall back on. If nothing else you could always be a teacher.
