We built a one-room facility over the fall and winter of 06/07.
Designed by Bob Alach, it's a raw room space (built inside a larger open warehouse space) of about 19x24x11 which ends up being about 14x17 or something (sort of a hexagonal-trapezoid shape in the end). Uses loads and loads of diaphragmatic panels, a number of diffusors and some clever reflection paths to delay early arrivals a bit longer than the room would normally allow. We have a large overhead skylight in the back of the room which allows natural light from a big wall of windows in the loft deck above to come in. Designed for surround. Custom desk as part of the room design to prevent reflection problems. We are using a projector/screen system rather than LCD monitors on the desk for our DAW operation. Very silent AC. Super nice results.
My partner and I built this ourselves in conjunction with some help from a super duper carpenter friend who kept us out of trouble with the big picture stuff as well as nice finish carpentry work as well as a few friends.
We saved a TON of money on labor but it was still a pretty expensive room to build. Very nice to work in now though.
