Your arguemnt is based on an unknowable fact. He woulnd't be a brand if it werent' for his music, but he's not a brand because he sold his CDs. Maybe he would have been a bigger brand.

If you're making an argument about perceived value, fine, but that's about money and Jay Z's value as a brand really is more about peers pressure than monetary value.

I think you're confused. I was making an analogy, but saying CDs are drugs.

Actually, that was my point.

Exactly, that's why P2P sharing is the most effective method, it's not spam or junk mail when it comes from someone you know.

Or maybe knowing them is how you know that it is.

A friend sharing new music with you because the know your tast is very different that Amazon saying "people who bought your book also bought these."

That's why no one is speind a lot of time downloading free music, right? They don't value it, so they don't want it, so they don't download it.

But for a new artist with good music what do you think would make him stand out among all of the MILLIONS of other wanna be artists giving away music?

If every day you opened your mail you had 1 MILLION pieces of junk mail, how many of them would you read?
None, but if the recommendation came from a friend or other qualified filter, I would. That's why P2P is more powerful than myspace.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm sure glad I haven't done that!
