Normally I use 67 mics on the kick. But we specialize in kick miking, so the rest of the drumset is recorded elsewhere. Usually we'd split each track into three freq bands and compress each differently, but we may also end up just using 50 of the mics and some 10-20 mults.
Usually this sounds pretty bad, so, like Lindell, we strap a sound replacer on each track, bus the tracks, and then a final sound replacer on the bus.
Works like a charm.
